Sacred Heart Mission
Shafter, TX

This adobe church was built in 1890 in the mining town of Shafter, which is about 20 miles north of Presidio on US Hwy 67. The church is an active parish, and is part of the Shafter Mining Historic District. Shafter was known as “the richest acre in Texas” after silver was discovered in 1880. Several rich mines and related mills were opened, and Shafter had a population near 4000 in the 1940's. Mine production, and Shafter, declined after the 1940's; and the town is now a ghost town. Sacred Heart is a mission of Santa Teresa de Jesús Catholic Church in Presidio, and is part of the Catholic Diocese of El Paso.
