Capote Baptist Church
Capote (Seguin), TX

Capote Baptist Church is located in Capote, a few miles east of Seguin, TX, on FM 466. The church was founded by Hiram Wilson in 1872 and is one of the oldest surviving Black churches in the state. The nearby Capote Cemetery is the resting place of generations of members of the extended Wilson family. The church and cemetery are maintained and active, and are supported by a family association that holds regular reunions.

Hiram Wilson and several other freedmen established the H. Wilson & Co. pottery company nearby in 1869. Wilson stoneware was known for its high quality and design innovations, and was popular throughout central Texas until a flood destroyed the works in 1903. Examples of Wilson stoneware are rare and extremely valuable today. The Wilson Pottery Foundation is dedicated to researching and preserving the history of Wilson stoneware. Information is available at the Sevastopol House in Seguin, which is worth a visit in itself.
